Drie van de twaalf merken naturelchips die de Consumentenbond onderzocht op acrylamide, bevatten relatief veel van deze mogelijk kankerverwekkende stof. De chipsmerken waar veel acrylamide in werd aangetroffen, zijn Kettle, Tra’fo en Hoeksche Chips. Sinds 2002 is bekend dat acrylamide in voeding zit, maar het is nog niet duidelijk of dit schadelijk is voor mensen en bij welke hoeveelheden. De industrie probeert het acrylamidegehalte in levensmiddelen terug te dringen, maar dat lukt nog niet altijd, blijkt uit het onderzoek. Acrylamide ontstaat vooral in zetmeelrijke producten die meer dan 120DEGC worden verhit. Bij friet en chips kan de acrylamide vorming aan de aardappelen liggen, maar ook aan het productieproces. Fabrikanten met te veel acrylamide in hun producten krijgen een waarschuwing van de Nederlandse Voedsel- en Warenautoriteit en worden geacht hun productieproces aan te passen. Ontbijtkoek De Consumentenbond onderzocht ook 16 merken ontbijtkoek op de hoeveelheid acrylamide. Het ging daarbij om ontbijtkoek van huismerken en A-merken uit de supermarkt: ‘gewone’ ontbijtkoek, verse ontbijtkoek, volkoren ontbijtkoek en ontbijtkoek met minder suiker. De hoeveelheid acrylamide in ontbijtkoek blijkt sterk gedaald ten opzichte van het vorige onderzoek van de Consumentenbond in 2009. Alle resultaten van het onderzoek naar acrylamide en tips om te voorkomen dat acrylamide ontstaat bij het zelf bakken van chips, aardappelen en koek, staan in de Gezondgids van april.
