Nieuwe technologie om koffiediefstal te bestrijden
Inbraken bij en overvallen op koffiefabrieken in Centraal-Kenia brengen kleine koffieboeren tot miljoenen euro’s verlies, maar de aanvallen kunnen binnenkort tot het verleden worden gerekend, dankzij een slimme innovatie. De heer Peter Mwathi, een agrarisch econoom, heeft een systeem uitgevonden om diefstal van koffiebonen bij de fabrieken en boeren te voorkomen.
De noodzaak van een dergelijke innovatie is als gevolg van gestegen prijzen door schaarste van koffie in de wereld en de daarop volgende diefstallen door illegale handelaars hard nodig. In de Centraal-provincie in het bijzonder, hebben diefstallen bij koffiefabrieken geleid tot verlies van miljoenen euro’s van de inkomsten van de boeren en er vallen soms zelfs doden bij enkele situaties waarbij de bewakers handlangers bleken van de criminelen.
De Coffee Board van Kenia schat dat er in de laatste 15 maanden telers meer dan 10.000 ton koffie hebben verloren aan stelende criminelen. Maar de innovatie, die op proef bij de Gatitu Coffee Factory in Tetu, Nyeri geïnstalleerd is, belooft de diefstallen terug te dringen en een stijging van de veiligheid van de koffieboeren. Het beveiligingssysteem, wat door middel van laser werkt en ingezet wordt in plaats van prikkeldraad, wordt op strategische plaatsen ingezet in de kwetsbare gebieden, zoals koffiedroogbedden, winkels, kantoren en machines.
De laserstralen detecteren menselijke inbraak en het systeem is in staat om onderscheid te maken tussen mens en dier. De signalen worden verzonden naar een decoder die een waarschuwing stuurt naar mobiele telefoons van geselecteerde medewerkers en de meldingen worden vastgelegd als inkomende gesprekken. Alles wat een beveiliger nodig heeft is een werkende mobiele telefoon. Het innovatieve systeem, bekend als bewakingsalarm op afstand, is nog op proef en kan actief worden gezet voor commerciële productie.
De wereldprijs van koffie was de laatste tijd al enorm gestegen. Door de diefstallen kan de prijs nog meer stijgen. Een stop van de criminele handelaren brengt ook de prijzen weer op een wat stabieler niveau.
