“Ze hebben hun broek allemaal onder hun oksels zitten!”, zegt m’n dochter ontsteld bij het zien van oude voetbalfoto’s uit 1929. “Dat is ook debiel zeg”, roept ze er nog eventjes fijntjes achteraan.
Ik laat haar een voetbalboekje zien met daarin allemaal hele oude foto’s met voetbalelftallen uit begin vorige eeuw. Gòh dat klinkt een tijd terug en ja toen voetbalden ze nog met hun broek praktisch onder hun oksels.
Ik vertel dochter dat zij een achterkleinkind is van mijn opa die op internationaal niveau voetbalde in de jaren dertig. Begonnen bij Fortuna Vlaardingen dat in 1928 deel uit maakte van ‘de Gouden Jaren’. Opa speelde in 1928 en 1929 in het eerste elftal dat enkele jaren achter elkaar kampioen werd in de tweede klasse KNVB. Hierna vertrok hij naar het Rotterdamsch Elftal, wat later Feyenoord werd, waarna hij in de selectie van het Nederlands Elftal werd geplaatst. Opa werd niet opgesteld om voor het Nederlands elftal te spelen, omdat hij in het veld vaak een te grote mond richting de scheidsrechter had. Dit extreme gevoel van onrechtvaardigheid tijdens het spel, kostte hem een verdere internationale carrière.
Toen ik klein was, liet m’n oma, inmiddels gescheiden van opa, de plakboeken zien die ze had bijgehouden tijdens zijn voetbalcarrière. Krantenknipsels met een voetballende opa uit zowel de lokale als de Rotterdamse krant en enkele landelijke bladen. Mijn opa was linksbenig, net zoals z’n kleindochter, (en achterkleindochter) en stond er om bekend dat hij vanaf de middenstip de bal geregeld in één keer in het doel schopte. Aangezien dit tafereel vrij bijzonder was, ook nu nog, bleef dit niet onopgemerkt door de pers.
Graag had ik de plakboeken nog eens ingezien; helaas zijn ze niet meer in bezit van de familie. Opa gaf zelf enkele van de boeken aan zijn oude club Fortuna, maar na enig speurwerk blijken deze boeken om duistere redenen niet meer in hun archief te zitten. Waar de overige boeken zijn gebleven, is ook een groot raadsel. Als het er nog eens van komt, ga ik zelf nog wel eens een zoekactie houden in de Vlaardingse en nationale archieven.
Ik vind het betreurenswaardig dat m’n opa nooit écht opgesteld is geweest bij dé elf alleen maar omdat hij voor het recht opkwam.
Tja, het is maar hoe je het leven bekijkt; de één komt overal mee weg en krijgt een belachelijk eenvoudige taakstraf ondanks dat hij iemand heeft doodgereden. Mag daarna gewoon weer voetballen alsof er niets gebeurd is en wordt zelfs beschermd door de hele KNVB. Geen enkele voetbalfan die hem er ooit nog op aankijkt; maar owé als je in het veld een te grote (terechte) bek tegen de scheidsrechter hebt…dan ligt je verdere carriere in duigen.
