And I haven\u2019t done any research into it either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But I\u2019ve now spent 60 years living among textiles and I think I have enough practical experience to draw completely useless, unfounded conclusions from this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because laundry never disappears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It really doesn\u2019t!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You THINK it does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You put it in the washing machine.<br>Machine spins.<br>Laundry comes out.<br>You hang it up.<br>You take it down.<br>You fold it.<br>You put it in the closet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yeeeeaaah, right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because while you\u2019re standing there doing all that, new laundry has already appeared somewhere else in the house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nobody saw how.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suddenly there\u2019s a stray sock lying around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For no apparent reason, there\u2019s a towel hanging over a lamp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s an item of clothing lying on a chair that nobody knows for sure is clean or dirty, so for the time being it has been granted independent status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And meanwhile, a small textile community has once again established itself in the laundry basket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I find that suspicious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Explain to me why you never, ever actually run out of laundry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can have the laundry basket completely empty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">COMPLETELY.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s a rare moment that lasts approximately three minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You look inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Empty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then you turn around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And there\u2019s another pair of underwear lying there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">HOW.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who put that there?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where did it come from?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Was it there just now?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Did someone get undressed at lightning speed?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Are they being produced somewhere?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At this point, I\u2019m not ruling out the possibility that laundry reproduces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That two socks meet somewhere behind the laundry basket and think: shall we start a towel?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That would also explain why you always have more laundry than clothes you can actually remember anyone ever wearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And socks are a separate case altogether.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You put two in the washing machine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One comes out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That shouldn\u2019t be physically possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A washing machine is not a border crossing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It doesn\u2019t have a back door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And yet socks disappear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But at the same time, socks occasionally appear that nobody recognizes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So somewhere, there must be an international sock exchange program that we haven\u2019t been informed about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe there\u2019s an entire underground network operating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m just asking questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Towels, by the way, are even worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can wash all the towels on Monday and then, ridiculously enough, discover on Tuesday that once again there\u2019s a load of wet textiles hanging all over the house as if you\u2019ve been sleepwalking and\u2026 well\u2026 apparently doing laundry in your sleep\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sounds a bit obsessive, actually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And bedding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I don\u2019t even really want to talk about that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s not laundry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s a project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Folding a duvet cover isn\u2019t a household chore anyway, but a physical confrontation between a human being and a piece of fabric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You start out full of optimism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Five minutes later, you\u2019re standing INSIDE the duvet cover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But you\u2019re in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually, you shove it into the closet in something vaguely resembling a folded state and decide that, from a societal point of view, that\u2019s quite enough for now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then you\u2019ve washed everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dried everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Folded everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Put everything away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You walk through the house feeling satisfied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Until you see a laundry basket somewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Full.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AGAIN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I genuinely don\u2019t know how, what, who, where, but most of all: WHY?!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So my current theory is as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Laundry cannot be destroyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can only be temporarily relocated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From body to floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From floor to laundry basket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From laundry basket to machine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From machine to drying rack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From drying rack to chair because you can\u2019t be bothered right now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From chair to closet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From closet to body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then the whole circus starts all over again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So we\u2019re not actually doing laundry at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019re managing a circular textile system that we\u2019re stuck with for life without our consent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What the hell does this entire deranged laundry system think?
